Mountbatten Bungalow is a colonial-era stone bungalow in the Hanthana hills near Kandy, set in six acres of gardens and tea with an infinity pool facing the hills. About 20 minutes from the city and run by Thema Collection, it takes its name from Lord Louis Mountbatten, whose wartime South East Asia Command was based in Kandy, and it keeps the feel of a private planter's house: antiques, four-poster beds, a fireplace in the lounge and a formal dining room.
There are three kinds of room: a few rooms and suites inside the old bungalow, and a group of modern timber chalets in the garden. All have air-conditioning, a minibar, an in-room safe, a TV, free Wi-Fi, bathrobes and slippers, and Ayurvedic toiletries from Thema's Ayurvie range. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
The whole property takes up to 38 guests, so a large family or a group of friends can take most or all of it; ask us if you want to book several rooms together.
The bungalow is a long, low building of grey dressed stone under a green tin roof, with a red-brick chimney, white multi-paned windows and a lawn running out to the gardens. Inside, the sitting rooms have a working fireplace, old portraits and Victorian furniture, and a sunroom lined with windows looks over the tea. Beyond the house, the infinity pool sits at the edge of the slope with views across the Hanthana hills, and there is a spa room for Ayurvedic and wellness treatments.
Meals are served in the bungalow's dining room, a high-ceilinged room hung with old maps and prints. The kitchen also runs cookery demonstrations, a good way to learn how a Sri Lankan rice and curry comes together.
The bungalow sits in the Hanthana range south of Kandy, and the bungalow can arrange guided walks, birdwatching and bike rides, including through the Hanthana tea plantations; the Ceylon Tea Museum, in an old tea factory, is in the same hills. In Kandy itself, the Temple of the Tooth stands beside Kandy Lake, and an evening Kandyan dance performance is easy to fit in. The Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya are about 4 kilometres away in a straight line, and the Kandy Commonwealth War Cemetery recalls the Second World War years when Mountbatten's headquarters were here.
Yes. The nearest main stations are Peradeniya, about 3 kilometres away in a straight line, and Kandy, about 4 kilometres away. Arrange a pick-up with the bungalow or with us in advance, as the bungalow is up in the hills outside the town.
The hotel puts the drive from Bandaranaike International Airport at about three hours. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Mountbatten Bungalow, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits couples who want a quiet, characterful place near Kandy rather than a city hotel, families who can spread out in a suite, and groups who would like a colonial bungalow largely to themselves. Two nights gives you a day in Kandy and a slow day by the pool. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Kandy.
