Surf & Zen is an eight-room surf, yoga and co-working villa in Habaraduwa on the south coast, less than ten minutes from the beach. It has a garden pool, daily yoga, surf lessons and a coworking space, and is built around a community of surfers, yogis and remote workers, with shared dinners most evenings, so it feels more like a sociable guest house than a hotel.
The villa's private rooms are sold under four names. Every room has its own bathroom with a hot and cold shower, and towels, linen, daily housekeeping and Wi-Fi are included.
The double rooms and the One Bedroom Studio take two adults, the Triple Room three. Up to two children can share with their parents; tell us their ages when you book.
Community dinners of Sri Lankan food are served every evening at 7 pm, and on Friday and Saturday nights there are bonfires and barbecues in the garden with music. Guests also have the use of a shared, fully equipped kitchen, and the Surf Suites have their own pantry corner. The villa's local cooks run Sri Lankan cookery classes using fresh local ingredients.
Mornings start with yoga overlooking the tropical garden, led by the host, Emily, a yoga teacher. Certified instructors give surf lessons for all levels on the beaches around Habaraduwa, and the coworking space has fibre Wi-Fi of over 100 Mbps, backup power and unlimited coffee and tea, with day passes for non-residents. There is a small pool in the garden, a pool table and smart TVs in the shared spaces, laundry service and secure parking.
The nearest sand is at Koggala beach, with Koggala Lagoon, its mangroves and islands just inland, and the Koggala sea turtle hatchery. The villa runs trips to a turtle hatchery to see young turtles released into the sea. The coast here is known for its stilt fishermen. To the west, Unawatuna beach and Galle Fort are a short drive away; to the east the surf town of Ahangama is about 3.8 kilometres away in a straight line. The villa also organises whale watching from Mirissa and day safaris to Yala.
Habaraduwa is on the south coast between Galle and Ahangama, reached from Colombo along the Southern Expressway. Surf & Zen can arrange pick-ups from Bandaranaike International Airport, or we can organise a private car and driver for you. By train, Habaraduwa station on the Coast Line is about 0.7 kilometres away in a straight line.
It suits solo travellers, couples, surfers and digital nomads who want a friendly community, a desk with good Wi-Fi and the beach close by, and who enjoy shared dinners and bonfire nights. It is not the place for a quiet, private resort. For more options along this coast see our places to stay in Habaraduwa.
