Moi Ella by DBI is a hill-country hotel on a forested ridge at Kurugama, outside Ella town, with an infinity pool looking out over valleys that fill with mist. Formerly known as Resort Myriad Star and now one of the five Moi hotels run by the Sri Lankan group DBI, it is built for hikers, train travellers and anyone who wants a view with their morning coffee.
The hotel occupies two white multi-storey blocks, so most rooms are stacked up the hillside with a view. Rooms have a private bathroom with hot water and refillable eco-friendly toiletries, and Wi-Fi is free. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
Children can share with adults in any category. With only a single Family Deluxe room and a single Family Studio, families should book early.
The hotel stands on its own on a wooded hillside, with the forest dropping away on every side. Below the blocks is a lawn with an infinity pool and two smaller round pools, and there is a bar, a restaurant, a terrace and quiet corners for reading. Mornings are cool and evenings can be misty, which is much of the appeal. There is parking on site, and the hotel can arrange drivers, guides and day plans.
The restaurant serves Sri Lankan dishes and international comfort food made with local produce, for lunch and dinner as well as breakfast, and the terrace has tables outside. Coffee and light bites are available through the day, there is high tea with Ceylon tea, and the kitchen can cater for vegetarians and allergies if you tell the hotel when you book.
The hotel is a short drive from Ella town, with its cafés and the walks that made it famous: the colonial-era Nine Arch Bridge, the easy climb up Little Adam's Peak and, for confident walkers, Ella Rock across the valley. Down the road through the Ella Gap are Ravana Falls and the Ravana Cave. Further south, past Wellawaya, the rock-cut figures of Buduruwagala are worth the trip, as is Diyaluma Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Tea estates and factory visits are all around.
Yes, and many guests do. Ella station is on the hill-country Main Line from Kandy, a famously scenic ride through the tea estates. The hotel is outside the town on a hillside road, so arrange a pick-up with the hotel or with us, or take a tuk-tuk from the station.
Ella is deep in the hill country, a long drive from Bandaranaike International Airport, so most travellers arrive by train from Kandy or by road at the end of a round tour. The simplest door-to-door option is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Moi Ella.
It suits couples, friends and families who want a quiet hillside base with a pool and a view, and who do not mind a short ride into town. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Ella, or the other DBI hotels around the island.
