About this experience
Board your air-conditioned vehicle in Mount Lavinia and travel to Kitulgala, where the Kelani River cuts through one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding rainforest habitats. Your expert guide leads you along the riverbank and into the dense undergrowth, pointing out endemic and migratory bird species as you go. A dugout outrigger canoe carries you across the river, and entrance fees are covered throughout the day. Keep an eye out for other wildlife sheltering in the forest canopy overhead.
The trail also passes the stretch of the Kelani River where David Lean filmed the Academy Award-winning The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957. White waterfalls punctuate the route, offering a cool pause before you head back. This is a private, full-day outing — roughly nine and a half hours in total — open to guests aged five and above. Gratuities and drinks are not included, so carry water and small change.
