A middle-aged writer haunted by regrets returns to Kyoto seeking Otoko, a woman from his past with whom he once had a destructive affair. He finds her transformed—now an accomplished painter living with a younger woman as her lover—yet still bound to him by unspoken affection. Kawabata crafts a tale of strange beauty, layering nostalgia and heartbreak as the reunion disrupts the delicate equilibrium between three souls caught between memory and desire.
