Question 1

What is Ziziphus rugosa used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus rugosa is used in Sri Lankan Ayurvedic and folk medicine primarily for its bark, which is prepared as a decoction to treat skin conditions, wounds, and inflammation. Its astringent and antimicrobial properties are recognised by traditional practitioners. Leaves are sometimes used externally in poultices, and the small fruits are edible with mild nutritive value.

Question 2

Where does Ziziphus rugosa grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant is most common in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate climate zones, particularly in the North Central and North Western provinces. It grows on forest margins, rocky hillsides, and scrubland, favouring well-drained soils at lower elevations. It is not typically found in the island's highland or wet-zone areas.

Question 3

Is Ziziphus rugosa the same as jujube?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus rugosa belongs to the same genus as the jujube (Ziziphus jujuba) and shares some botanical and medicinal characteristics with it. However, it is a distinct species with smaller fruits and a rougher leaf texture. It is primarily a forest and scrubland plant rather than a cultivated fruit tree.

Question 4

What family does Ziziphus rugosa belong to?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus rugosa belongs to the family Rhamnaceae, commonly known as the buckthorn family. This family includes a number of shrubs and small trees with ecological and medicinal importance across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.

Question 5

Is Ziziphus rugosa found in national parks in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant can be encountered in dry-zone protected areas such as those in the North Western province, including areas near Wilpattu National Park where dry-zone scrub forest habitats prevail. It is not a prominent species in wet-zone or highland parks. Guided nature walks in these areas may include mentions of the plant in a broader discussion of dry-zone flora.

Question 6

What are the Sinhala or local names for Ziziphus rugosa?

Accepted Answer

Ziziphus rugosa is known by vernacular names in Sinhala and Tamil within Sri Lanka, though these can vary by region. It is sometimes referred to in the context of broader Ziziphus species known locally as 'Mahadarun' or related names in Sinhala folk usage. Formal botanical databases maintained by Sri Lankan institutions provide the authoritative local nomenclature.

Question 7

How is Ziziphus rugosa bark prepared as a medicine?

Accepted Answer

Traditionally, the bark is dried, ground or roughly broken, and boiled in water to create a decoction. This preparation is typically applied topically for skin conditions or taken internally in small doses under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner. The preparation method can vary depending on the specific condition being treated and the regional tradition of the practitioner.

Question 8

Where can I learn about Sri Lanka's medicinal plants as a traveller?

Accepted Answer

The Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya near Kandy is an excellent starting point, featuring labelled collections that include many of Sri Lanka's medicinal species. Village herb garden tours, Ayurvedic wellness centres, and guided forest walks in reserves such as Sinharaja also offer opportunities to explore the island's botanical heritage. Some cultural village experiences in the dry zone include demonstrations of traditional plant-based remedies.
