Question 1

What is Xylopia championii used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Xylopia championii is catalogued as an Ayurvedic medicinal plant in Sri Lanka. It is used within the island's indigenous medicine tradition, though specific applications are generally administered by trained practitioners. Like other members of the Annonaceae family, it is associated with digestive and carminative properties in traditional formulations.

Question 2

Is Xylopia championii endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Xylopia championii is considered endemic or near-endemic to Sri Lanka. It grows naturally in the wet lowland and submontane forests of the island, particularly in the wet zone. Its restricted range makes conservation of Sri Lanka's rainforests particularly important for the species.

Question 3

Which plant family does Xylopia championii belong to?

Accepted Answer

Xylopia championii belongs to the family Annonaceae, the same family that includes soursop and custard apple. In Sri Lanka, the Annonaceae family is represented by several species across the country's forest zones. The genus Xylopia is found across tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

Question 4

Where in Sri Lanka does Xylopia championii grow?

Accepted Answer

The species typically grows in humid, low-elevation and submontane forests in Sri Lanka's wet zone, where rainfall is high and forest cover is dense. Protected areas such as the Sinharaja Forest Reserve represent the type of habitat this species favours. It is a forest understorey to mid-canopy tree rather than a cultivated plant.

Question 5

What does the name Xylopia mean?

Accepted Answer

The genus name Xylopia comes from the Greek words for 'bitter wood', referring to the characteristically acrid taste found in the wood and seeds of many species in this group. The species name championii honours a 19th-century botanical collector connected to the documentation of Sri Lanka's flora.

Question 6

How is Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic plant catalogue organised?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda maintains a formal register of indigenous medicinal plants used within the island's traditional medicine system, known as deshiya chikitsa. Plants are documented with their local names, botanical classifications, and recorded therapeutic uses. Xylopia championii is included in this catalogue as a recognised medicinal species.

Question 7

Can I see Xylopia championii when visiting Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

As a native forest species, Xylopia championii is not commonly found in gardens or agricultural settings. Guided botanical walks in wet-zone forest reserves offer the best chance of encountering it. Sri Lanka's Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya also maintain collections of native plant species that may include representatives of the Annonaceae family.
