Vrischika and Kumbha Porondam

Vrischika (Scorpio) and Kumbha (Aquarius) sit four signs apart one way and ten signs apart the other, so the rashi-level picture changes depending on which partner holds which sign. This page explains those results in both the Sinhala porondam and Tamil porutham systems. It also explains why the two birth stars, not the rashis alone, decide the final match.

Which rashi is being compared here?

In Sri Lankan marriage matching, the rashi is the moon sign (chandra rashi). This is the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscope columns, so a person's Vrischika or Kumbha here may differ from the star sign they usually quote.

At rashi level, three items are checked: the rashi count (how many signs apart the two moon signs are), the relationship between the two rashi lords, and vashya, a traditional measure of mutual attraction. Because the count is taken from the bride's sign to the groom's, the results differ depending on who holds which sign.

What happens when the bride is Vrischika and the groom is Kumbha?

Counting from Vrischika to Kumbha gives 4. In the Sinhala porondam system, the rashi item is partly obtained and rashyadhipathi is partly obtained. Vashya is not obtained.

In the Tamil porutham system, rasi, rasi adhipathi and vasya are all not obtained. The rashi lords are Mars for Vrischika and Saturn for Kumbha. They are not friends: one regards the other as neutral, and the other is unfriendly in return. This is why the lord item scores less well here.

These are only three items in a much larger assessment. They are not a verdict on the couple.

What changes when the bride is Kumbha and the groom is Vrischika?

Counting from Kumbha to Vrischika gives 10, and this count is more favourable. The rashi item is obtained in both the Sinhala and Tamil systems.

The rashi lords are still Saturn and Mars, with the same neutral-and-unfriendly relationship. Sinhala rashyadhipathi is therefore partly obtained, and Tamil rasi adhipathi is not obtained. Vashya is not obtained in either system.

In this direction, the rashi count works in the couple's favour, while the lord and vashya items read much as they do in the reverse direction. This shows how much the direction of counting matters for this pair.

Why do the birth stars decide the real match?

Each rashi spans parts of several nakshatras, which are divided into quarters. As a result, any pairing of these two signs covers 81 star-quarter combinations, and the outcomes vary widely between them.

With the bride in Vrischika, 78% of combinations fall into the calculator's weak band for Tamil porutham. With the bride in Kumbha, the figure is 38%. In both directions, no combination reaches 8 of 10 porutham, and 4% show a Tamil rajju clash. On the Sinhala side, every combination passes porondam when the weekday factor is set aside.
