Question 1

What is Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In traditional Ayurveda and folk medicine traditions across Asia, Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides has been used for skin care, digestive support, and as a general herbal tonic. Topical preparations from the fresh plant have been applied to minor skin conditions, while decoctions are used internally. Clinical research on this specific species is still limited, so traditional use should be understood in that context.

Question 2

Where does Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows naturally in moist, shaded habitats including paddy-field margins, stream banks, and forest understoreys. It is found across Sri Lanka's wet zone and in suitable mid-elevation locations. Its trailing, mat-forming habit allows it to colonise damp ground efficiently.

Question 3

Is Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides the same as Centella asiatica (Gotukola)?

Accepted Answer

No, they are distinct species, though both belong to the Apiaceae family and share some habitat preferences. Centella asiatica (Gotukola) is far more extensively researched and is a well-known Sri Lankan superfood and medicinal herb. Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides has its own traditional uses and phytochemical profile.

Question 4

Accepted Answer

It is a small, creeping herb with round to kidney-shaped leaves with scalloped margins that lie close to the ground on slender stalks. Flowers are tiny and white, arranged in small clusters typical of the Apiaceae family. The plant roots at its nodes as it spreads, forming low mats over moist soil.

Question 5

Is Hydrocotyle sibthorpioides found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer
