Question 1

Where exactly is Elgin Falls in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Elgin Falls is located within the Elgin Tea Estate, approximately 18 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It sits along the highland railway line between Nanu Oya and Ambewela stations.

Question 2

Can you see Elgin Falls from the train?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The falls are directly visible from the scenic train journey between Nanu Oya and Ambewela stations. This is one of the most convenient ways to see the waterfall, as the track passes close to the cascade. Sitting on the correct side of the carriage — typically the left when travelling from Nanu Oya toward Ambewela — gives the clearest view.

Question 3

How tall is Elgin Falls?

Accepted Answer

Elgin Falls drops approximately 25 metres through the tea estate terrain. While not among the tallest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, its setting within a working plantation and its visibility from the train make it a distinctive stop.

Question 4

Why is it called Elgin Falls?

Accepted Answer

The waterfall takes its name from the Elgin Tea Estate, which was itself named after Elgin, a town in Moray, Scotland. British colonial planters who established tea cultivation in this part of Sri Lanka often named estates and landmarks after places in Britain.

Question 5

Is Elgin Falls easy to reach by road?

Accepted Answer

The falls are accessible by road from Nuwara Eliya, following the route toward Ambewela. However, public transport options are limited, and most visitors hire a private driver or arrange a guided tour that combines Elgin Falls with other hill-country attractions.

Question 6

What is the best season to visit Elgin Falls?

Accepted Answer

The falls are most impressive during and just after the inter-monsoon periods in March–April and October–November, when highland rainfall is higher. The waterfall flows year-round, and the surrounding tea landscape is green in all seasons.

Question 7

Are there other waterfalls near Nuwara Eliya worth visiting?

Accepted Answer

The Nuwara Eliya district has several waterfalls within reasonable driving distance, including Ramboda Falls on the Kandy–Nuwara Eliya road and various lesser-known cascades in the broader hill country. Combining Elgin Falls with a train journey and a visit to Horton Plains makes for a well-rounded highland day trip.
