Question 1

What is Drypetes gardneri?

Accepted Answer

Drypetes gardneri is a native Sri Lankan plant belonging to the family Putranjivaceae. It is catalogued among the island's officially recognised ayurvedic medicinal plants and is typically found in wet-zone forest habitats across Sri Lanka.

Question 2

What family does Drypetes gardneri belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Putranjivaceae, which was previously classified within Euphorbiaceae. This family is distributed across tropical regions of Asia and Africa and includes several species with documented medicinal uses.

Question 3

Is Drypetes gardneri used in traditional Sri Lankan medicine?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is included in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants maintained by the Department of Ayurveda. Its inclusion reflects recognition within traditional practice, though detailed pharmacological studies on this specific species are still limited in published literature.

Question 4

Where can Drypetes gardneri be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species is associated with Sri Lanka's wet-zone tropical forests, particularly in the southwestern lowlands. Habitats such as primary rainforest reserves and secondary forest patches in that region represent its typical environment.

Question 5

Why are Sri Lankan medicinal plants like Drypetes gardneri at risk?

Accepted Answer

Deforestation, agricultural expansion, and unsustainable wild harvesting have placed pressure on many of Sri Lanka's native plant species. As a biodiversity hotspot, the island has a high proportion of endemic flora, making the loss of forest habitat particularly acute for species with restricted natural ranges.

Question 6

How does the Sri Lankan ayurvedic plant catalogue work?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda compiles and maintains an official register of plants used in indigenous medicine, cross-referencing classical Sinhala medical manuscripts with modern botanical taxonomy. This ensures correct species identification and supports sustainable use and conservation efforts.

Question 7

Can I learn about Sri Lankan medicinal plants as a tourist?

Accepted Answer

Yes, spice gardens, ayurvedic resorts, and herbal farms across Sri Lanka offer guided experiences covering the island's medicinal flora. The Kandy region and the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya are particularly good starting points for visitors interested in traditional plant knowledge.
