Which rashi is being compared here?
The rashi used in porondam and porutham is the moon sign (chandra rashi), the sign the Moon occupied at birth in the sidereal zodiac used in Sri Lanka. It is not the sun sign printed in newspaper horoscopes, so a person's moon sign may differ from the sign they usually call their own.
Matching begins by counting from the bride's rashi to the groom's. Dhanu and Makara sit next to each other, so the count is 2 when the bride is Dhanu and 12 when the bride is Makara. The Tamil reading is similar but not identical: rasi porutham is not obtained, rasi adhipathi porutham is obtained, and vasya porutham is not obtained. The difference on the rashi-lord item reflects how each tradition weighs a neutral relationship between Jupiter and Saturn. These are only the sign-level items, though, and they form a small part of the whole match.
How does a Makara bride with a Dhanu groom look?
Reversing the roles changes the picture. With the bride in Makara and the groom in Dhanu, the count from bride to groom is 12. In the Sinhala system, rashi porondam is partly obtained, rashyadhipathi porondam is partly obtained, and vashya is not obtained.
In the Tamil system, rasi porutham is obtained, rasi adhipathi porutham is obtained, and vasya porutham is not obtained. The rashi lords remain Saturn and Jupiter, still mutually neutral, but the direction of the count makes this arrangement read more favourably at sign level in both traditions. Vashya is not obtained either way round.
