Question 1

What is Cyperus haspan used for in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus haspan is documented in Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plant catalogue, where it is traditionally associated with therapeutic uses related to fever, urinary complaints, and skin conditions. As with most Ayurvedic plants, it is typically used as part of compound formulations rather than alone, and its application is guided by classical texts and qualified practitioners.

Question 2

Where does Cyperus haspan grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

It grows in moist, waterlogged habitats including paddy field margins, irrigation channels, marshes, and the edges of slow-moving streams. It is found from coastal lowlands up into the mid-country and is common across both the wet zone and the irrigated dry zone.

Question 3

Is Cyperus haspan the same as nut grass?

Accepted Answer

No. Both belong to the genus Cyperus, but Cyperus haspan is a slender, moisture-loving sedge without tuberous rhizomes, while nut grass (Cyperus rotundus) produces distinctive tubers and colonises drier, cultivated soils. They have different documented medicinal properties and should not be used interchangeably.

Question 4

What family does Cyperus haspan belong to?

Accepted Answer

Cyperus haspan belongs to Cyperaceae, the sedge family. A simple way to distinguish sedges from grasses in the field is the cross-section of the stem: sedges are typically triangular, giving rise to the traditional saying 'sedges have edges.' The species is a tufted perennial with a reddish-brown umbel inflorescence.

Question 5

Is Cyperus haspan found only in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

No, it has a wide pantropical distribution and is native to tropical and subtropical regions across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. In Sri Lanka it is specifically catalogued as part of the island's Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia, reflecting how a globally distributed species can carry region-specific medicinal significance.

Question 6

Are there Ayurvedic plants similar to Cyperus haspan in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Sri Lanka's medicinal plant catalogue includes numerous species across very different plant families. Wetland and grassland plants share the pharmacopoeia with forest trees like Pongamia pinnata and Acacia chundra, as well as compound preparations such as Yogaraja Guggulu that draw on multiple botanical ingredients. Each plant is documented with specific indications within the classical system.

Question 7

Where can I learn more about Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

The Institute of Indigenous Medicine at the University of Colombo is the primary academic institution for Ayurvedic research in Sri Lanka and maintains documentation on the island's medicinal flora. Several Ayurvedic wellness centres and botanical gardens across the country also provide guided introductions to key species in their living collections.
