Question 1

What is Cryptocoryne willisii?

Accepted Answer

Cryptocoryne willisii is a small aquatic plant endemic to Sri Lanka, belonging to the family Araceae. It grows in shallow, slow-moving freshwater streams, particularly in the island's wet and intermediate zones. It is catalogued in Sri Lanka's ayurvedic medicinal plant records and is also popular among aquarium hobbyists worldwide.

Question 2

Is Cryptocoryne willisii endemic to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Cryptocoryne willisii is native to Sri Lanka. It was named after John Christopher Willis, a botanist who directed the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya in the early twentieth century. The species is part of a broader genus distributed across tropical Asia, but several Cryptocoryne species found in Sri Lanka are found nowhere else in the world.

Question 3

Is Cryptocoryne willisii used in ayurvedic medicine?

Accepted Answer

It is included in Sri Lanka's official catalogue of ayurvedic medicinal plants, maintained by the country's Department of Ayurveda. Aquatic and riparian plants like Cryptocoryne willisii occupy a recognised niche in Sri Lanka's traditional healing tradition, though detailed clinical research on this specific species remains limited.

Question 4

How do I grow Cryptocoryne willisii in an aquarium?

Accepted Answer

Plant it in groups in nutrient-rich substrate, ideally in a low- to medium-light environment. It grows slowly and is tolerant of a range of water parameters, making it suitable for low-tech planted tanks. Expect temporary leaf melt when first introduced to a new tank — this is a normal stress response and the plant typically regrows within a few weeks.

Question 5

Where can I see Cryptocoryne willisii in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows along shaded stream margins in the wet lowlands of southwestern Sri Lanka, particularly near intact forest areas. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya near Kandy also maintains collections of native Sri Lankan plants and offers a more accessible way to observe the island's botanical diversity.

Question 6

Is Cryptocoryne willisii endangered?

Accepted Answer

The species faces pressure from habitat degradation, including deforestation, agricultural runoff, and collection for the aquarium trade. Like many freshwater aquatic plants with a limited endemic range, it is vulnerable to the loss of clean, shaded stream habitat. Conservation of Sri Lanka's wet-zone forests is the most important factor in its long-term survival.

Question 7

What family does Cryptocoryne willisii belong to?

Accepted Answer

It belongs to the family Araceae, the same family as taro and peace lilies. Within that family it belongs to the genus Cryptocoryne, a group of tropical Asian aquatic plants popular in both botanical research and the ornamental aquarium hobby.
