Question 1

What is Bauhinia acuminata used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan and South Asian Ayurvedic traditions, Bauhinia acuminata is used for its astringent bark, which is applied to skin disorders and wound healing. The leaves and flowers appear in preparations for fever and inflammation, while the roots are used in some digestive formulations. Its seeds have also been studied for antimicrobial properties.

Question 2

Where can Bauhinia acuminata be found in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species grows naturally and in cultivation across Sri Lanka's lowland dry and intermediate zones, particularly in the North Central and North Western provinces. It is also widely planted in home gardens, temple grounds, and roadsides across the island. It tolerates dry conditions and well-drained soils well.

Question 3

Is Bauhinia acuminata the same as the orchid tree?

Accepted Answer

Bauhinia acuminata is one of several species in the Bauhinia genus sometimes called orchid trees because of their large, showy flowers. This species is specifically known as the white bauhinia or snowy orchid tree, distinguished by its pure white flowers. Other species in the genus produce pink or purple blooms.

Question 4

What are the active compounds in Bauhinia acuminata?

Accepted Answer

Phytochemical studies have identified flavonoids, tannins, and glycosides as key bioactive components in Bauhinia acuminata. These are associated with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities. Some research has also explored its potential effects on blood glucose regulation, though large-scale clinical trials are still limited.

Question 5

How is Bauhinia acuminata different from other Bauhinia species?

Accepted Answer

Bauhinia acuminata is primarily identified by its white flowers, which distinguish it from more commonly cultivated species like Bauhinia purpurea and Bauhinia variegata, which produce purple or mauve blooms. It is also generally smaller in form and is more associated with medicinal use in Sri Lankan and Southeast Asian traditions.

Question 6

Is Bauhinia acuminata safe to use at home as a remedy?

Accepted Answer

While the plant has a long history of traditional use, self-medication with any plant-based remedy is not recommended without guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner. Dosage, preparation method, and suitability vary depending on individual health conditions. Sri Lanka's Department of Ayurveda registers practitioners who can provide informed guidance.

Question 7

Does Bauhinia acuminata have any ecological role?

Accepted Answer

As a member of the Fabaceae family, Bauhinia acuminata contributes to soil health through nitrogen fixation via root-associated bacteria. Its flowers also attract pollinators, making it a useful species in garden and agroforestry settings. Its adaptability to dry conditions adds to its ecological value in degraded or low-rainfall landscapes.
