Question 1

What is Barringtonia asiatica used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, various parts of Barringtonia asiatica — including the seeds, bark, and leaves — have been used in preparations for skin conditions and inflammatory complaints. The seeds contain saponins and other bioactive compounds that are the subject of ongoing pharmacological research. Traditional applications are managed by qualified practitioners who process plant materials appropriately.

Question 2

Where can I find Barringtonia asiatica in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree grows naturally along Sri Lanka's coastal belt, favouring sandy, saline soils near the sea and tidal waterways. It is commonly found in the Southern, Western, and Northwestern coastal regions. Specimens also appear in temple grounds and parks where it is cultivated for its ornamental flowers.

Question 3

Is Barringtonia asiatica the same as the fish poison tree?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Barringtonia asiatica is widely known as the fish poison tree or sea poison tree, names that refer to the traditional practice of using the toxic seed extracts to stun fish. This practice exploits the saponin content of the seeds. The practice is environmentally harmful and is no longer considered acceptable or legal in most places.

Question 4

What does Barringtonia asiatica fruit look like?

Accepted Answer

The fruit is a large, fibrous drupe with a distinctive four-angled or four-ridged shape, often described as resembling a lantern or angular pear. It is buoyant and designed by nature for ocean dispersal, which is how the tree has spread across the Indo-Pacific. The fruit can be spotted on beaches in coastal Sri Lanka.

Question 5

Is Barringtonia asiatica native to Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Barringtonia asiatica is native to tropical coastal regions of South and Southeast Asia and extends across to the Pacific islands. Sri Lanka falls within its natural range, and the tree grows wild along the island's shore zones. It is considered a naturalised and culturally familiar species rather than an introduced ornamental.

Question 6

When does Barringtonia asiatica flower in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The tree is known for its night-blooming flowers, which open in the evening and fall by morning. Flowering periods can vary, but the tree generally produces blooms during warmer months. The flowers are large, white with pink-tipped stamens, and are primarily pollinated by nocturnal insects and bats.

Question 7

Are there Ayurvedic gardens in Sri Lanka where I can see medicinal plants?

Accepted Answer

Several Ayurvedic spice and herbal gardens operate across Sri Lanka, particularly in the Kandy, Matale, and Galle areas, where guides explain the traditional uses of native medicinal plants. These gardens often include species listed in classical Sinhala Ayurvedic texts. Botanical gardens such as the Royal Botanic Gardens in Peradeniya also display a broad range of Sri Lankan plant species.
