Question 1

What is the Audience Hall in Polonnaruwa?

Accepted Answer

The Audience Hall, or Magul Maduwa, is a 12th-century royal reception platform built by King Parakramabahu I in the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa. It is best known for its processional stairway decorated with individually carved elephant sculptures. Though the roof no longer survives, the stone substructure and carvings remain in remarkably good condition.

Question 2

How old are the elephant carvings at the Audience Hall?

Accepted Answer

The elephant carvings date to the reign of Parakramabahu I, who ruled from 1153 to 1186 CE, making them around 850 to 900 years old. They are carved from granite and represent one of the finest surviving examples of medieval Sinhalese stone sculpture. Each elephant in the frieze is rendered with slightly different posture or expression.

Question 3

Is the Audience Hall included in the Polonnaruwa entry ticket?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A single archaeological zone ticket covers all sites within the Polonnaruwa Archaeological Reserve, including the Audience Hall, the Quadrangle, Gal Vihara, and the other palace ruins. The ticket is purchased at the main entrance to the reserve. The current fee for foreign visitors is set by the Central Cultural Fund and is payable in local currency or by card.

Question 4

How do I get to Polonnaruwa from Colombo?

Accepted Answer

Polonnaruwa is roughly 215 km from Colombo, typically a four- to five-hour drive by road depending on traffic. There is also a rail connection via Gal Oya junction, though journey times are longer. Private transfers arranged through a DMC like Lakpura offer the most flexible option, especially if you plan to combine the visit with Dambulla or Sigiriya.

Question 5

Can I visit the Audience Hall independently without a guide?

Accepted Answer

The site is open to independent visitors, and the zone is navigable by bicycle or on foot. However, the historical context of the Audience Hall — including the symbolic role of the elephant frieze and the layout of the royal precinct — is much easier to appreciate with a licensed guide. Guides can be hired at the entrance to the archaeological reserve.

Question 6

Are there other things to see near the Audience Hall?

Accepted Answer

The Audience Hall sits within the Royal Palace complex, so the Parakramabahu Palace ruins and the Council Chamber are immediately adjacent. Within the broader zone, the Vatadage in the Quadrangle, the Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddha statues, and the Kiri Vehera stupa are all within cycling distance. A half-day to full day allows a thorough tour of the zone.

Question 7

What is the best time of day to visit for photography?

Accepted Answer

Early morning, between about 7 and 9 am, is ideal. The low angle of sunlight picks out the relief detail on the elephant carvings very effectively, and visitor numbers are lower before the midday rush. The light at this time is also cooler, making it more comfortable to move slowly through the open stone site.

Question 8

Is the Audience Hall part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Audience Hall falls within the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The designation recognises the site's outstanding universal value as a remarkably intact medieval capital city with an exceptional concentration of hydraulic engineering, religious architecture, and royal buildings.
