Question 1

What is Anoectochilus setaceus used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, Anoectochilus setaceus — known locally as Wana Raja — is used to support liver and kidney function, help manage blood sugar, and as a general rejuvenating tonic. It also appears in traditional formulations for respiratory conditions and skin inflammation. Its use is typically overseen by experienced Ayurvedic practitioners.

Question 2

Where does Anoectochilus setaceus grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows on the shaded floor of humid tropical forests, primarily in Sri Lanka's wet zone and mid-elevation montane regions. It requires undisturbed soil rich in leaf litter and specific mycorrhizal fungi. Intact forest areas such as Sinharaja and surrounding forest corridors are among its key habitats.

Question 3

Is Anoectochilus setaceus rare or endangered?

Accepted Answer

The species faces pressure from habitat loss and over-collection across its range in Asia. Orchids in the Anoectochilus genus are listed under CITES Appendix II, meaning international trade is regulated. In Sri Lanka, its survival depends on the conservation of primary wet-zone rainforest.

Question 4

What does Anoectochilus setaceus look like?

Accepted Answer

It is a small, creeping terrestrial orchid growing to around 10–20 cm tall. Its most distinctive feature is its dark, velvety leaves crossed with a network of fine golden or reddish veins, which give it the common name 'jewel orchid.' It produces a slender upright spike of small white to pinkish flowers.

Question 5

What is the Sinhala name for Anoectochilus setaceus?

Accepted Answer

The plant is known in Sinhala as Wana Raja (වන රජ), which translates roughly as 'king of the forest.' This name reflects the high value placed on it within traditional Sri Lankan healing practices.

Question 6

Can tourists see Anoectochilus setaceus in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Spotting it in the wild requires a guided walk through undisturbed wet-zone rainforest — Sinharaja Forest Reserve is among the most accessible locations with suitable habitat. Some Ayurvedic gardens and botanical institutions also cultivate this and related species. Visitors should never collect or disturb wild plants.

Question 7

Has modern science studied Anoectochilus setaceus?

Accepted Answer

Yes, phytochemical studies have identified compounds including kinsenoside and various flavonoids in the plant, with preliminary laboratory research suggesting anti-diabetic, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, rigorous human clinical trials remain limited, and it should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment without professional guidance.
