Question 1

What is Aegiceras corniculata used for in Ayurveda?

Accepted Answer

In Sri Lankan Ayurvedic medicine, Aegiceras corniculata is traditionally used for its properties attributed to the bark, leaves, and seeds. It has been used in dermatological preparations and as an ichthyotoxic and insecticidal agent in folk practice. Any medicinal use should be guided by a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner, as certain compounds in the plant are toxic in their raw form.

Question 2

Where can I find Aegiceras corniculata in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The plant grows in the mangrove forests along Sri Lanka's western, northwestern, southern, and eastern coastlines. Key sites include the Negombo Lagoon, Puttalam Lagoon, Madu River estuary, and the Batticaloa coastal wetlands. Guided boat trips through these areas offer the best opportunity to observe the species.

Question 3

Is Aegiceras corniculata a mangrove plant?

Accepted Answer

Yes, it is a true mangrove species that grows in the intertidal zone of coastal lagoons and estuaries. It is adapted to saline conditions and periodic flooding, and it shares the viviparous germination strategy characteristic of many mangrove plants.

Question 4

What are the chemical compounds found in Aegiceras corniculata?

Accepted Answer

The plant contains bioactive compounds including saponins, alkaloids such as aegicerin and aegiceradienol, and various phenolic substances. These compounds are associated with the plant's traditional medicinal and ichthyotoxic uses, and have been studied for antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in scientific literature.

Question 5

Is Aegiceras corniculata endangered or protected in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The species itself is not currently classified as globally threatened, but the mangrove ecosystems it inhabits are under pressure from coastal development and aquaculture. Sri Lanka has active mangrove restoration programmes, and many sites where this species grows fall within protected wetland zones.
