Kalu Dodol is one of Sri Lanka's most distinctive traditional sweets — a dense, dark confection made from kithul jaggery, rice flour, and coconut milk, slow-cooked until it sets into a firm, sliceable slab with a smooth, chewy texture. The name means roughly 'black dodol', a reference to the deep mahogany colour that the kithul jaggery develops as the mixture is worked over a low flame. Umandawa packs this confection in a 400g tin bearing both the Umandawa and Global Buddhist Village names.

Kithul jaggery is the ingredient that defines Kalu Dodol above all others. It comes from the sap of the toddy palm and carries a rich, complex sweetness quite unlike refined sugar — earthy, slightly smoky, and with a depth that ordinary cane jaggery cannot replicate. Combined with rice flour for body and coconut milk for richness, the three ingredients are stirred continuously over heat for an extended period until the mixture thickens, darkens, and finally pulls away from the sides of the pan. The result is a confection that rewards patience in its making.

Kalu Dodol has been part of Sri Lankan life for centuries, with its origins traced variously to Malay, Indonesian, and Portuguese influences absorbed into the island's culinary traditions over time. The Hambantota region is particularly associated with its production, though the sweet appears at festive tables across the country. It is a fixture of the Sinhala New Year in April, as well as at weddings, almsgivings, and family gatherings where it is set out alongside other traditional preparations.

The Umandawa brand is associated with the Malsiripura community in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka, where a range of food products is produced and distributed. The 400g tin is a practical format — substantial enough for sharing at the table during a celebration, or for working through gradually as a teatime treat over several sittings. The tin format keeps the confection well-protected and ready to serve without any preparation beyond cutting it into portions at room temperature.
