Governor Grey is a loose leaf Ceylon black tea scented with bergamot flavour, packed in a 100g tin by Tealia, a Sri Lanka-based family tea company founded in 2001. It is Tealia's Earl Grey-style offering within their Ceylon black tea range — a format with a long tradition in Sri Lankan tea production, here given the brand's own character and name.
The tea itself is pure Ceylon black tea, grown and processed in Sri Lanka. To the leaf, bergamot flavour is added, lending the citrus-floral aroma that distinguishes this style from an unflavoured Ceylon. The ingredient declaration on the tin is straightforward: Pure Ceylon Black Tea and Bergamot Flavour, nothing beyond those two. The name Governor Grey is part of Tealia's brand storytelling, evoking the era when Ceylon tea first found its way into formal British households.
The tin is a practical thing as well as a handsome one. Metal keeps the leaf away from light, moisture and ambient kitchen odours — all of which shorten a loose leaf tea's useful life. The 100g net weight is a useful quantity: enough to settle into a tin on a shelf rather than disappear after a few brews, but not so large that it sits long enough to fade.
Loose leaf preparation gives the leaf room to open fully in the pot. A warmed teapot or infuser, freshly boiled water, and a short steep of a few minutes is the standard approach for a Ceylon black tea of this kind. The bergamot comes through as a citrus note in the aroma as much as in the cup itself. The tea works well plain, though it is equally at home with a small amount of milk if that is the preference.
Tealia holds Sri Lanka Tea Board approval among its certifications, meaning the Ceylon tea at the heart of this blend meets the standards required for that designation. The tin also carries Spanish-language text alongside the English, reflecting the brand's international distribution.
