A Sinhala-language Buddhist title. The name translates roughly as "similes spoken by the Buddha" — upamā being the simile or comparison, and buddhabhāsita that which was uttered by the Buddha. The Pali discourses are full of such figures: the raft, the burning house, the lotus in the pond, the man struck by an arrow. A book under this title belongs to the long Sinhala tradition of gathering and explaining that material for lay readers and students of the Dhamma.
It is written entirely in Sinhala script, so it suits readers who are comfortable reading Sinhala rather than those approaching Buddhism through English translation. Readers overseas who grew up with the language, Sunday Dhamma school teachers, and students preparing for Buddhist studies examinations are the natural audience.
The vendor on record is Godage, a Colombo publishing house that issues Sinhala and English titles across religion, literature, history and education, with a substantial list in Sinhala Buddhist writing of this kind.
