A village cooking experience is one of the warmest ways to meet rural Sri Lanka: away from tourist restaurants and into a rustic village kitchen, with an outdoor clay hearth and dishes made the way they have always been made.
What to expect
- A welcome drink: usually a king coconut, herbal tea or fresh fruit juice.
- Traditional techniques: scrape fresh coconut on a low bench scraper, squeeze coconut milk by hand and grind spices in a heavy stone mortar and pestle.
- Cooking over an open fire: the curries are cooked on clay hearths fuelled by firewood, which gives them a smoky depth of flavour.
- The feast: the meal is served on a lotus or banana leaf. Eating with your right hand, the local custom, is encouraged, and cutlery is always available.
- A waterfall visit: the experience includes a visit to a waterfall in the Beragala area.
Priced per person. Choose the number of people in your group when you book.
Good to know
- Meeting point: Beragala town. The local team meets you there and leads the way; the site is about 30–40 minutes away.
- Group size: up to 10 guests per vehicle. Roads to some locations are too narrow for large coaches.
- Included: the cooking demonstration and the meal.
Getting there
Transport is not included. Travel in your own vehicle to Beragala town, where the local team meets you and guides you to the start. If you are not travelling with a vehicle, one can be arranged on request at an extra cost.
