Wild Glamping Knuckles

Kandy, Sri Lanka

Wild Glamping Knuckles is a ten-tent mountain camp of the Thema Collection at Thangappuwa in the Knuckles Range, part of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands, with trails to the high peaks, Kotaganga waterfall and Heel Oya village straight from the door. There is no mains electricity or Wi-Fi: the camp runs on solar lamps and a generator for a few hours, which is exactly the point for most of the walkers who come here.

Which room should I book?

  • Luxury Tent – the camp's only category, which Thema calls the Deluxe Tent: ten safari-style canvas tents of about 23 square metres, each raised on a timber deck above the ground to protect the hillside, with a green metal roof, a private timber-walled bathroom with a rain shower and hot water, a seating area, a writing desk, a wardrobe, a safe and Ayurveda-inspired toiletries by Ayurvie. Eight of the tents have twin beds and two have a queen-size bed, so if you are a couple who want a double bed, ask for one of the queen tents when you book. Each tent sleeps two adults, with no room for an extra bed.

Lighting in the tents is by solar-powered lamps; a generator runs for several hours on request. Nights in the mountains can be cool, so bring a warm layer.

What is the food like?

Meals are served in the Campers' Lounge, the main hall, which looks out over the valley and the peaks and is open from 6.30am to 9.30pm. The chefs cook Sri Lankan dishes with regional vegetables as well as Western meals, and in the evenings there is often a barbecue beside the campfire under the stars.

What walks can I do from the camp?

The camp is on the Thangappuwa side of the Knuckles Range, so the main trails start on foot without a jeep ride. All guided walks include a trekking guide, leech socks and, where available, trekking poles, and the camp keeps a range of hiking gear for guests.

  • High Knuckles trek, the big one: about eight hours, hard, through the village, tea gardens and the conservation forest to the summit, with a packed lunch, the chance of spotting the endemic leaf-nosed lizard, and an early start at 7am.
  • Waterfall trek: about six hours, moderate, through terraced tea and forest to Kotaganga waterfall, with a packed lunch by the water.
  • Heel Oya village trail: about three and a half hours, easy, through tea, pine forest and terraced paddy fields to Heel Oya, with a swim in a waterhole and an optional village lunch and cooking demonstration. It works well on your day of departure, as your driver can collect you from the village.
  • Corbett's Gap: about four hours, easy, to the famous viewpoint at Corbet's Gap, named after the British surveyor who mapped the range and known locally as Attala Wettuwa.
  • Burnside walk: three to four hours, easy, through pine forest to a Hindu kovil, best started between 7am and 3pm.

There are also guided bird-watching trails, and natural rock pools near the camp for a cold swim after a day's walking. Expect leeches on the forest trails; the guides will show you how to deal with them.

What is nearby?

Beyond the camp's own trails, the remote village of Meemure lies deeper in the range, and on the far side of the range are the viewpoint at Pitawala Pathana and the pass at Riverston. The city of Kandy, with the Temple of the Tooth, is about 20 kilometres away in a straight line.

How do I get from the airport to Wild Glamping Knuckles?

The camp is about 105 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Wild Glamping Knuckles. Note that ordinary cars cannot reach the camp: guests are picked up at Thangappuwa, about 2 kilometres before the site, and taken the rest of the way by four-wheel drive because the track is rough, narrow and winding.

Who is Wild Glamping Knuckles best suited to?

It suits keen walkers, birdwatchers and couples or friends who want to be properly off-grid in the mountains for a night or two, and who are happy to swap Wi-Fi for a campfire. It is not the place for anyone who needs mains power or easy access. For more choice in the region see our places to stay around Kandy.
