Wild Glamping Knuckles is a ten-tent mountain camp of the Thema Collection at Thangappuwa in the Knuckles Range, part of the UNESCO-listed Central Highlands, with trails to the high peaks, Kotaganga waterfall and Heel Oya village straight from the door. There is no mains electricity or Wi-Fi: the camp runs on solar lamps and a generator for a few hours, which is exactly the point for most of the walkers who come here.
Lighting in the tents is by solar-powered lamps; a generator runs for several hours on request. Nights in the mountains can be cool, so bring a warm layer.
Meals are served in the Campers' Lounge, the main hall, which looks out over the valley and the peaks and is open from 6.30am to 9.30pm. The chefs cook Sri Lankan dishes with regional vegetables as well as Western meals, and in the evenings there is often a barbecue beside the campfire under the stars.
The camp is on the Thangappuwa side of the Knuckles Range, so the main trails start on foot without a jeep ride. All guided walks include a trekking guide, leech socks and, where available, trekking poles, and the camp keeps a range of hiking gear for guests.
There are also guided bird-watching trails, and natural rock pools near the camp for a cold swim after a day's walking. Expect leeches on the forest trails; the guides will show you how to deal with them.
Beyond the camp's own trails, the remote village of Meemure lies deeper in the range, and on the far side of the range are the viewpoint at Pitawala Pathana and the pass at Riverston. The city of Kandy, with the Temple of the Tooth, is about 20 kilometres away in a straight line.
The camp is about 105 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Wild Glamping Knuckles. Note that ordinary cars cannot reach the camp: guests are picked up at Thangappuwa, about 2 kilometres before the site, and taken the rest of the way by four-wheel drive because the track is rough, narrow and winding.
It suits keen walkers, birdwatchers and couples or friends who want to be properly off-grid in the mountains for a night or two, and who are happy to swap Wi-Fi for a campfire. It is not the place for anyone who needs mains power or easy access. For more choice in the region see our places to stay around Kandy.
