In Sri Lanka's Ayurvedic tradition, the bark of Delonix regia has been used as an antipyretic to address fever, while leaf preparations have been noted for potential anti-inflammatory properties. Where is the best place to see the flame tree in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Delonix regia is common throughout Sri Lanka's lowland dry and intermediate zones. Particularly good places to see it include the roadways of the North Central Province, urban parks in Colombo and Kandy, and the ancient city area of Polonnaruwa, where mature trees line temple grounds and courtyards.

Question 6

Is Delonix regia the same as the flamboyant tree?

Yes, the flamboyant tree is one of several common names for Delonix regia, alongside flame tree, royal poinciana, and peacock flower. All these names refer to the same species, distinguished by its vivid red-orange flowers and wide, spreading canopy.

Is Delonix regia dangerous or toxic?

Accepted Answer

The seeds of Delonix regia contain compounds including lectins that can be harmful if ingested without proper preparation. While the tree is safe to be around in normal circumstances, consuming any part of it — especially the seeds — without guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is not recommended.
