Question 1

When is Bak Full Moon Poya Day in 2025?

Accepted Answer

Bak Full Moon Poya Day falls on the April full moon each year. The exact date shifts annually with the lunar calendar, so it typically lands somewhere between early and late April. Checking the Sri Lanka government's official public holiday list for the current year gives the precise date.

Question 2

What does Bak Poya Day commemorate?

Accepted Answer

Bak Poya marks the second visit of the Buddha to Sri Lanka, traditionally believed to have taken place at Nagadeepa in the island's north. It is one of twelve monthly Poya days, each linked to an event in Buddhist history. The occasion is observed with temple worship, Sil precepts, and Dhamma sermons.

Question 3

Are shops and restaurants open on Poya Day in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Many smaller shops, government offices, and banks close on Poya days. Restaurants in tourist areas generally remain open for food service, but the sale of alcohol is prohibited island-wide on all Poya holidays. Hotels catering to international guests typically continue normal operations.

Question 4

Can tourists visit Buddhist temples on Bak Poya Day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, temples are open to respectful visitors on Poya days. You should wear modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, remove footwear at the entrance, and avoid photography inside active shrines. The atmosphere during Poya temple visits is particularly genuine and worth experiencing.

Question 5

How is Bak Poya different from Vesak Poya?

Accepted Answer

Vesak Poya in May is the most significant Buddhist holiday of the year, commemorating the birth, Enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha. It is marked by elaborate lantern displays and public pandals across Sri Lanka. Bak Poya in April is quieter by comparison, focused on the Buddha's second visit to the island, and serves in some ways as a period of preparation before Vesak.

Question 6

What is Sil, and how is it observed on Poya Day?

Accepted Answer

Sil refers to the undertaking of eight or ten Buddhist precepts for the duration of a Poya day. Lay Buddhists who observe Sil dress in white, refrain from eating after midday, abstain from entertainment and intoxicants, and spend the day in meditation and religious practice at a temple. It is a voluntary but widely practised commitment.

Question 7

Is Bak Poya a good time to visit Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

April is generally a pleasant month to visit Sri Lanka, with the Bak Poya and New Year season creating a culturally rich atmosphere. Be aware that domestic travel demand is high during this period, so accommodation and transport should be booked well in advance. The religious observances offer international visitors an authentic glimpse into Sri Lankan Buddhist life.
