The rock is within walking distance, so you can be at the gate when it opens and climb past the frescoes and the Lion's Paw before the heat and the crowds; the Sigiriya Museum is by the entrance. The hotel gives Pidurangala Rock, the best place to watch the sun rise over Sigiriya, as 3.5 kilometres away, Minneriya National Park, famous for its elephant gatherings, as 15.9 kilometres, the Dambulla Cave Temple as 19 kilometres and Kaudulla National Park as 37.8 kilometres. Hurulu Eco Park and the forest monastery at Ritigala are within reach for a half day.
The hotel is on the road through Sigiriya village, behind a white wall and picket fence, with its long terracotta roofs and shaded verandas around lawns and old trees. It is a quiet, simple base rather than a resort, and its appeal is how little time you spend getting to the rock.
Sigiriya is about 130 kilometres north-east of Bandaranaike International Airport in a straight line. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to EKHO Sigiriya, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits travellers who want to climb Sigiriya early and simply walk back for breakfast, and anyone looking for a comfortable, characterful base for the Cultural Triangle and the elephant parks without paying for resort facilities they will not use.
