The Great Elephant Gathering is one of the great wildlife spectacles of Asia, and this private safari puts you in an open 4x4 jeep inside Minneriya National Park to see it for yourself. During the dry season, water disappears from the surrounding forests of Matale, Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee, and wild elephants travel from across the region to the Minneriya Tank, a large reservoir inside the park's protected boundary. Herds that can run into the hundreds gather along its banks to drink, feed on the fresh grass at the water's edge and bathe, making this the largest known gathering of wild Asian elephants anywhere in the world.
Your guide, who also acts as tracker, drives the route and knows where the herds are likely to be moving across the grassland and scrub. Expect open plains dotted with small family groups of adults and calves, dirt tracks that dip toward the treeline, and wide views over the tank itself with elephants scattered across the water's edge and the fields beyond. The jeep is open-sided, so sightlines and photography are unobstructed, and the pace is unhurried enough to simply watch a herd graze or move toward the water.
Beyond the elephants, Minneriya's grassland and scrub support a wide range of native birds and other wildlife, and your driver will point out what crosses your path along the way. This is a private booking, so the jeep is yours alone rather than shared with other travellers, and the safari runs for three hours from pickup to drop-off.
Pickup and drop-off are included from any location within five kilometres of the park gate; beyond that radius, hotel transfers are not covered. The jeep holds up to six passengers, comes with an experienced driver and tracker, and a water bottle is provided per person. You can choose a jeep-only booking, in which park entrance fees are paid separately in cash, or a jeep-with-tickets option that includes park entry so you can bypass the queues at the gate, which matter most during the height of the gathering season. Food, drinks and gratuities are not included, and the minimum age for this safari is five.
