AIDA Ayurveda & Spa Resort is a small Ayurveda retreat on the bank of the Bentota River, run by the AIDA Group, a Sri Lankan company founded in 1975 by Nissanka Weerasena. It is built for guests who come for treatment rather than a beach holiday alone: stays are arranged around a personal consultation with the resort's Ayurvedic doctors, daily therapies, yoga and vegetarian Ayurvedic meals, in a quiet tropical garden between the river and the sea.
The resort stands at 12/A Mangala Mawatha in Bentota, on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, with the Bentota River along one side of the grounds. Bentota Beach is a short walk away, and the railway stations at Bentota and Aluthgama are about 0.3 km and 0.8 km away, both on the coastal line between Colombo and Galle. Bandaranaike International Airport lies 84 km to the north as the crow flies.
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is about 110 km from the resort by road, and the drive around Colombo and down the coast usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. The easiest way to arrive after a long flight is a private airport transfer booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to AIDA Ayurveda & Spa Resort.
The resort is deliberately small. The hotel lists 14 Deluxe Rooms, two Private Villas and the Sakura Suite, divided between the main building and a riverside wing, where the rooms look out over the Bentota River. Rooms have a balcony or terrace, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, and stays are usually booked on full board with Ayurveda treatments included.
Each stay begins with a consultation with one of the resort's Ayurvedic doctors, who sets a treatment plan of daily therapies such as Abhyanga oil massage, Shirodhara and herbal steam baths, with longer Panchakarma programmes for guests who stay two weeks or more. There is a yoga centre with regular classes, a swimming pool with a whirlpool, and the open-sided restaurant beside the pool serves vegetarian Ayurvedic meals as a buffet, matched to the treatments.
Between treatments, the beach and the river are close at hand: boat trips into the mangroves of the Bentota River leave from nearby, and water sports are offered along the river and the coast. Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, and Brief Garden, created by his brother Bevis, are both a short drive inland. Further along the coast are the turtle hatcheries of Kosgoda, the Madu River with its mangrove islands and Galle Fort, an easy day trip. Lakpura can arrange private transfers and day tours to all of these from the resort.
