A full-day excursion from Ahungalla, this safari brings you to Yala National Park — Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife reserve and the second largest in the country — set along the southeastern coast where dry monsoon forest, scrub jungle, rocky outcrops, freshwater lagoons, and a long stretch of Indian Ocean coastline come together in a single landscape. The jeep safari itself runs for three hours inside the park, covering the most wildlife-rich areas on defined tracks through Block 1.
Yala's best-known resident is the Sri Lankan leopard, a subspecies found nowhere else on earth and the park's apex predator. The photographs from this tour tell you what a good day looks like: a leopard resting on dry forest ground, another draped across a broad tree branch in dappled light, a pair of juvenile elephants pushing and tumbling through green scrub while an adult forages behind them, a peacock with its full tail fanned open in iridescent blue and gold, and a male spotted deer standing alert on a grassy clearing. Beyond leopards and elephants, the park is home to the Sri Lankan sloth bear, wild water buffalo, sambar and spotted deer, mugger crocodiles, and 215 recorded bird species including several endemic to the island.
The park was first protected as a wildlife sanctuary in 1900 and formally declared a national park in 1938, giving it more than a century of conservation history. Its terrain ranges from reddish-brown rocky plains inland to coastal dunes at the sea's edge, and the mix of freshwater and saltwater habitats draws an extraordinary range of aquatic and wading birds. The dry season, broadly February through July, is when animals concentrate around remaining water sources and sightings tend to be most frequent; early morning and late afternoon are when the animals are most active.
The tour departs from Ahungalla and all road transport, fuel, parking, and highway tolls are taken care of throughout the day. An English-speaking chauffeur guide accompanies you for the entire journey, and two 500 ml bottles of water per person per day are provided.
