About this experience
Kandy's street food is sold from carts, doorways and glass-fronted stalls that most visitors walk straight past. This walking tour puts a foodie guide beside you for two hours so you know what you are eating and how each dish fits into everyday Sri Lankan eating. You walk with a king coconut in hand, and you find out why the Sri Lankan hopper has a following far beyond the island.
You taste spicy sambols, then red and white rice string hoppers, fruit chutneys and Sri Lankan pickles. At a cassava chip stall you crunch through a bag while the frying smell hangs over the pavement. There is a stop for tea and a hot samosa, a triangular pastry with a savoury filling, and a chance to try some of Sri Lanka's more unusual fruits. After a walk around the city you settle into something more filling, either a packet of lump rice or a plate of koththu rotti chopped on the griddle. The finish covers the different varieties of Sri Lankan banana and how they differ in flavour, served with a handmade melon sweet.
The tour runs two hours and covers up to ten varieties of street food along with your guide. Booking is for one to eight guests and confirms instantly. Cancel free of charge with more than 24 hours notice; inside that window the booking is non-refundable. There is no hotel pick-up, so you meet the guide in Kandy and cover the route on foot.
