About this experience
Board the train at Kandy and settle in as the tracks climb through a landscape of mist-wrapped hills and rolling tea estates. The scenic rail journey to Nanu Oya — one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated train routes — takes you past emerald green fields and cool mountain air. Your ticket is included (second or third class, with a first-class upgrade subject to availability), and a bottle of water is waiting for you on board.
From Nanu Oya, your English-speaking chauffeur guide drives you up winding mountain roads into Nuwara Eliya, the hill town the British once shaped in the image of home. Spend the day exploring colonial-era mansions, the tranquil shores of Lake Gregory, and the historic post office — worth a stop if you'd like to send a postcard. The return leg to Kandy is by air-conditioned vehicle, with hotel drop-off included. The full day runs to around 12 hours; minimum age is 5.
