Kattankudy

Kattankudy is a coastal town in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province, situated near Batticaloa. It is renowned for its predominantly Muslim population, with over 98% of residents identifying as Sri Lankan Moors. The town spans approximately 2.56 square kilometers of land and 1.33 square kilometers of inland waterways, making it one of the most densely populated areas in the country. In recent years, Kattankudy has gained attention for its architectural landmarks, notably the replica of Jerusalem's Dome of the Rock. This three-story mosque, inaugurated in December 2022, features a golden dome and blue octagonal base, attracting visitors and boosting local halal tourism. The town also houses the Kattankudy heritage Museum, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the Islamic heritage and cultural History of the region.

Kattankudy has faced significant challenges in its History. On August 3, 1990, the town was the site of a tragic massacre where over 147 Muslim worshippers were killed during evening prayers. This event remains one of the darkest chapters in Sri Lanka's civil conflict. Additionally, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami had a devastating impact on the town, resulting in the loss of over 100 lives and extensive property damage.

Despite these adversities, Kattankudy has demonstrated resilience and a commitment to progress. Initiatives like the Green City Master Plan, developed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, aim to promote sustainable urban development. These efforts focus on enhancing public services, environmental conservation, and community well-being, positioning Kattankudy as a model for inclusive and sustainable growth in the region.
