What is a Dandu Beraya?

The Dandu Beraya is a traditional Sri Lankan drum carved from a bamboo trunk. Unlike most drums, it has no animal-hide membrane — the bamboo itself produces the sound when struck with short wooden sticks. It was historically used for village communication and folk dancing.

What does 'Dandu Beraya' mean in Sinhala?

The word 'dandu' derives from the Sanskrit 'danda', meaning wood or staff, which reflects the bamboo construction of the drum. 'Beraya' is the Sinhala word for drum. Together the name essentially means 'wooden drum'.

How is the Dandu Beraya different from other Sri Lankan drums?

Most Sri Lankan drums — such as the Yak Beraya and Geta Beraya — use animal hide stretched over a wooden body to create their resonant sound. The Dandu Beraya uses no hide at all; the bamboo body itself is the sound source, giving it a sharper, drier tone suited to folk and outdoor settings.

What sticks are used to play the Dandu Beraya?

The drum is played with two sticks made from Atteriya wood, each between 8 and 12 inches long. The drum is tied to the player's waist so both hands remain free to strike, which also allows the player to dance while performing.

Where is the Dandu Beraya used in Sri Lanka today?

The Dandu Beraya is most commonly heard at village festivals, rural folk-dance performances, and cultural demonstrations. It is less frequently seen at formal theatrical or temple events, where larger hide-covered drums are preferred. Village tourism experiences offer some of the most authentic opportunities to encounter it.
