Question 1

Where is the S.S. Rangoon shipwreck in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The S.S. Rangoon lies in Sri Lankan coastal waters, with the exact co-ordinates typically provided by licensed local dive operators who manage access to the site. The general location is reachable from dive centres on the western or southern coast, depending on the specific wreck position.

Question 2

How deep is the S.S. Rangoon wreck?

Accepted Answer

Depth varies across the wreck, with shallower sections accessible to advanced open-water divers and deeper portions suited to technical divers. Local operators will confirm exact depths during the pre-dive briefing and will tailor the dive plan to participants' certification levels.

Question 3

Is the S.S. Rangoon good for beginner divers?

Accepted Answer

The site is not recommended for beginners. An advanced open-water certification and some prior wreck experience are typically required, as depth and potential current make the conditions more demanding than a standard reef dive. Always consult the dive operator before booking.

Question 4

What marine life can you see at the S.S. Rangoon?

Accepted Answer

The encrusted hull hosts hard and soft corals, schools of glassfish and fusiliers, moray eels, lionfish, and scorpionfish, with reef sharks occasionally patrolling the deeper sections. The wreck functions as a mature artificial reef, so marine life density is generally high.

Question 5

What is the history of the S.S. Rangoon?

Accepted Answer

The S.S. Rangoon was a British India Steam Navigation Company steamship that operated on Indian Ocean trade routes during the 19th century, calling at Colombo as part of the Calcutta–Aden corridor. The vessel sank off Sri Lanka's coast and has since been colonised by coral and marine life.

Question 6

Can you remove artefacts from the S.S. Rangoon wreck?

Accepted Answer

No. Sri Lankan law prohibits the removal of artefacts from submerged archaeological sites, and historic wrecks in national waters fall under the jurisdiction of the Department of Archaeology. Responsible dive operators enforce a strict no-touch policy during all wreck dives.

Question 7

What is the best time of year to dive wrecks on Sri Lanka's west coast?

Accepted Answer

The calmest conditions on the western seaboard typically occur between November and April, after the southwest monsoon has passed. Visibility and sea state improve considerably during this window, making it the preferred season for most wreck and reef dives in the area.
