Question 1

What is Nelumbo nucifera called in Sinhala?

Accepted Answer

Nelumbo nucifera is called නෙළුම් (Nelum) in Sinhala and தாமரை (Thamarai) in Tamil. Both names refer to the sacred lotus and appear frequently in religious, literary, and everyday contexts across Sri Lanka.

Question 2

Is the lotus flower the national flower of Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Nelumbo nucifera — the blue lotus — is the national flower of Sri Lanka, though in practice the pink-flowered form is most commonly seen growing in the island's tanks and temple ponds. Its selection reflects the flower's deep roots in Buddhist culture and Ayurvedic heritage.

Question 3

What are the medicinal uses of Nelumbo nucifera?

Accepted Answer

In Ayurvedic practice, different parts of the plant serve different purposes: the rhizome is used for digestive and cooling properties, the seeds as a tonic for the nervous and cardiac systems, and the flowers and stamens for their haemostatic and fever-reducing effects. Modern research has confirmed a range of bioactive alkaloids and flavonoids in the plant.

Question 4

Can you eat lotus root in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lotus root, known locally as nelum ala, is cooked in curries or prepared as a pickle and is considered a seasonal delicacy. Young lotus seeds are also eaten raw or roasted, and both are more commonly found in rural markets and festive meals than in mainstream restaurants.

Question 5

Where is the best place to see lotus flowers in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The ancient irrigation tanks of the North Central Province — particularly around Polonnaruwa — offer some of the most extensive lotus-covered waterscapes in the country. Temple ponds island-wide, the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, and the Madu Ganga wetlands are also reliable locations. Early morning visits before 9 a.m. give the best chance of seeing open blooms.

Question 6

What does the lotus symbolise in Buddhism and why is it important in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents purity of mind and spiritual awakening — its rise from muddy water to produce a clean flower mirrors the path from ignorance to enlightenment. In Sri Lanka, where Theravada Buddhism is central to national culture, the lotus appears in temple architecture, religious offerings, and ritual ceremony every day.

Question 7

Are there Ayurvedic wellness experiences in Sri Lanka that feature lotus?

Accepted Answer

Many Ayurvedic resorts and herbal garden tours in Sri Lanka include Nelumbo nucifera as part of their plant collections and treatment protocols. Visitors can learn about medicinal plant identification, preparations, and their classical uses through guided herbal walks at several wellness properties and botanical institutions across the island.
