Question 1

What was the purpose of moats in ancient Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Moats in ancient Sri Lanka served military, cosmological, and aesthetic purposes simultaneously. They slowed enemy advances, reinforced the symbolic centrality of the king within a water-ringed universe, and formed the backbone of ornamental water-garden systems. At sites like Sigiriya, the moat was part of a fully integrated hydraulic network.

Question 2

Can you still see the moat at Sigiriya today?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The outer moat at Sigiriya is partially intact and visible to visitors exploring the western approach to the rock fortress. It retains water for much of the year and is best appreciated in the morning light or during the post-monsoon season when water levels are highest.

Question 3

How old are the moats at Sri Lanka's ancient cities?

Accepted Answer

The moat system at Sigiriya dates to the fifth century CE, constructed during the reign of King Kashyapa around 477–495 CE. Polonnaruwa's defensive moats were developed during the Polonnaruwa kingdom, which flourished between the 10th and 13th centuries CE.

Question 4

Is the moat at Sigiriya part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The entire Sigiriya rock fortress complex, including the surrounding water gardens and moat system, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The moat and gardens are among the site's most significant archaeological features.

Question 5

How were ancient Sri Lankan moats kept filled with water?

Accepted Answer

Builders relied on gravity-fed channels connecting nearby tanks or rivers to the moat, supplemented by seasonal rainfall collected within the complex. Clay and stone lining minimised water loss, while sluice gates allowed water levels to be regulated throughout the year.

Question 6

Which Sri Lankan ancient city has the best-preserved moat?

Accepted Answer

Sigiriya is generally considered to have the most impressive and best-studied moat and water-garden system, owing to its exceptional state of preservation and ongoing archaeological research. Polonnaruwa's outer defensive moat is also significant, though less completely intact.

Question 7

Do I need a separate ticket to see the moat area at Sigiriya?

Accepted Answer

No separate ticket is required. The moat and surrounding water gardens at Sigiriya are included within the standard archaeological site entrance fee. Visitors walk through the garden and moat zone as part of the main approach to the rock fortress.
