Question 1

What does FOP stand for in tea?

Accepted Answer

FOP stands for Flowery Orange Pekoe. It is a whole-leaf Orthodox black tea grade indicating that the batch contains a meaningful proportion of young, budding leaf tips alongside the open leaf. The term describes leaf size and tip content, not flavour or origin.

Question 2

Does Flowery Orange Pekoe taste like orange?

Accepted Answer

No. The word "orange" in the grade name has nothing to do with the citrus fruit. It most likely traces back to the Dutch House of Orange, a historical trading association with quality goods. FOP teas typically taste floral, clean, and lightly astringent, with the exact flavour depending on the growing region and elevation.

Question 3

Is Flowery Orange Pekoe a strong tea?

Accepted Answer

FOP brews to a lighter, more delicate liquor than broken grades like BOP or BOPF because the whole leaf infuses more slowly. High-grown FOP from Nuwara Eliya or Dimbula produces a pale, bright cup, while mid- and low-grown FOP is fuller-bodied. Steeping for 4–5 minutes and using slightly more leaf will yield a stronger infusion.

Question 4

How is Flowery Orange Pekoe different from regular Orange Pekoe?

Accepted Answer

Both are whole-leaf Orthodox grades, but Flowery Orange Pekoe contains more of the young, tender tips than plain Orange Pekoe (OP). This generally results in a slightly more delicate and aromatic cup. Within the grading system, FOP ranks above OP but below grades with higher tip densities such as GFOP and TGFOP.

Question 5

Can I use Flowery Orange Pekoe tea bags?

Accepted Answer

True FOP is a whole-leaf loose-leaf grade and does not fit in standard tea bags without some compromise to the leaf. Some brands use the name on larger pyramid bags that allow the leaf to expand, which produces a better infusion than a traditional flat bag. For the full character of FOP, loose-leaf preparation in a teapot is recommended.

Question 6

Which Sri Lanka tea region produces the best Flowery Orange Pekoe?

Accepted Answer

"Best" depends on preference. Nuwara Eliya FOP is prized for extreme delicacy and floral lightness. Uva FOP, particularly from the July–September season, is known for a distinctive brisk character with a floral top note. Dimbula FOP shows clean brightness in the January–March season. Single-estate teas from any of these regions labelled with the Ceylon Lion Logo are generally reliable indicators of quality.

Question 7

How should I store Flowery Orange Pekoe tea to keep it fresh?

Accepted Answer

Store FOP in an airtight, opaque container away from light, heat, and strong odours. Whole-leaf teas absorb surrounding aromas easily, so avoid keeping them near spices or coffee. Properly stored, a sealed FOP packet retains good quality for up to two years, though drinking within 12 months of purchase gives the freshest result.

Question 8

What is the Lion Logo on Ceylon tea and does it guarantee FOP quality?

Accepted Answer

The Sri Lanka Tea Board's Lion Logo certifies that the tea inside the packaging is 100% pure Ceylon tea, processed and packed in Sri Lanka. It verifies origin and purity but does not independently certify a specific grade. When you see the Lion Logo alongside an FOP grade declaration, it confirms both the Ceylon origin and the whole-leaf Orthodox grading.
