Question 1

What is the place of Bambusa bambos in ayurvedic tradition?

Accepted Answer

Bambusa bambos is known in ayurvedic tradition chiefly for its silica-rich internode concretion called tabasheer or vanshalochan, an ingredient of classical formulations such as Sitopaladi churna. Its leaves, roots, and young shoots also appear in traditional preparations. This is cultural heritage, not medical advice.

Question 2

What is the Sinhala name for Bambusa bambos?

Accepted Answer

In Sinhala, Bambusa bambos is commonly known as 'Wael una' or simply 'una,' a term broadly applied to large thorny bamboo species in Sri Lanka. It is distinguished from smaller bamboo varieties by its thick culms and formidable thorny branch structure.

Question 3

Where does Bambusa bambos grow in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Bambusa bambos is found mainly in Sri Lanka's dry and intermediate zones, growing along river banks, roadsides, and forest margins. It is also widely cultivated around village homesteads as a living fence and windbreak.

Question 4

What is tabasheer and which plant does it come from?

Accepted Answer

Tabasheer, also called vanshalochan, is a white siliceous concretion found inside the hollow internodes of Bambusa bambos. It has been part of South Asian ayurvedic heritage for centuries as an ingredient of classical compound preparations.

Question 5

Is Bambusa bambos the same as common bamboo?

Accepted Answer

Bambusa bambos is one of many bamboo species, but it is specifically the giant thorny bamboo — a large, clump-forming species with thick culms and dense thorny nodes. It is distinct from smaller or non-thorny bamboo species used for ornamental or light craft purposes.

Question 6

Can Bambusa bambos be eaten?

Accepted Answer

Young shoots of Bambusa bambos are edible and are occasionally used as a vegetable or included in traditional dishes in Sri Lanka. However, mature bamboo parts are not consumed; the plant's culms are primarily valued for construction and craft.

Question 7

Is Bambusa bambos found in Sri Lanka's national parks?

Accepted Answer

Bambusa bambos can be encountered along the margins of several Sri Lankan national parks and forest reserves, particularly in the dry zone. It tends to grow in secondary and disturbed habitats rather than deep inside primary forest, so sightings are more common near park boundaries and riverine areas.
