Question 1

What is Jinadasa Thala Guli?

Accepted Answer

Jinadasa Thala Guli is a Sri Lankan brand that has produced traditional sesame-based sweets since 1934. Its flagship product, the thala bola, is a compact sesame ball made using Ayurvedic-influenced recipes that have been passed down through the founding family. The business operates from three locations along the Colombo–Kandy highway.

Question 2

What does thala guli taste like?

Accepted Answer

Thala guli has a nutty, slightly sweet flavour with a dense, firm texture. The sesame seeds provide a mild roasted note, while the jaggery or treacle binding adds a gentle caramel sweetness. The overall effect is less sweet than most Western confectionery, with a satisfying, slightly chewy bite.

Question 3

Where can I buy Jinadasa Thala Guli in Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

The brand has three locations: its head office and hotel in Mahena, Warakapola; a food corner in Abeypussa; and a branch in Pilimatalawa near Kandy. All three sit along or near the A1 Colombo–Kandy highway, making them convenient stops on one of Sri Lanka's most-travelled routes.

Question 4

Can I order Jinadasa Thala Guli outside Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lakpura lists the Jinadasa Thala Bola (25-cube packs) for online purchase, which can be arranged for delivery. The product's shelf stability and compact size make it well-suited for international shipping as a food souvenir.

Question 5

How long has Jinadasa Thala Guli been operating?

Accepted Answer

The business was founded in 1934 by Mr. K. P. Jinadasa, giving it more than eight decades of continuous operation as of today. It is one of the older surviving traditional sweet producers in the Kegalle District of Sri Lanka.

Question 6

Are Jinadasa sweets suitable for people following a natural or Ayurvedic diet?

Accepted Answer

The brand prepares its products using traditional recipes that align with Ayurvedic principles — emphasising natural ingredients, minimal processing, and the nutritional properties of sesame. However, anyone with specific dietary requirements or health conditions should review the ingredient list directly with the producer before purchasing.

Question 7

Is there a restaurant at Jinadasa Thala Guli?

Accepted Answer

The head office in Mahena, Warakapola also operates as a hotel and dining venue, where freshly prepared Sri Lankan meals are served alongside the brand's traditional sweets and beverages. It functions as a full stop for travellers on the Colombo–Kandy route rather than a sweet shop alone.
