Ayurvie Sigiriya is a small Thema Collection Ayurveda retreat at Audangawa, outside Sigiriya, with ten earth-built rooms among paddy fields and herb gardens. The fields look across to Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks. Guests come for personalised Ayurvedic and Panchakarma programmes led by an Ayurvedic doctor, open-air treatment rooms, yoga at sunrise and sunset and organic vegetarian food from the retreat's own gardens.
There is one room type at Ayurvie Sigiriya, and the name below is the one you will see when you book.
With only ten rooms, all in the same category, the main choice is which treatment programme to follow rather than which room to take.
Meals are organic and vegetarian, cooked largely from produce grown in the retreat's own gardens, and are planned around your treatment and constitution in line with Ayurvedic principles. The cookery demonstration with a garden visit shows how the dishes are made.
Each stay is built around a treatment programme, from relaxation and rejuvenation to detox, stress management and weight reduction, starting with a diagnosis by the Ayurvedic doctor and continuing with daily treatments, including Panchakarma, in open-air treatment rooms, and yoga every morning and evening. Ayurvie recommends 10 to 14 nights for a full programme. Between treatments there are birdwatching trails, pottery demonstrations, a visit to a paper recycling centre, a walk to the village temple, a night trail and safaris with a naturalist, and you can even spend a night in a pela, the raised wooden hut farmers use to watch over their crops.
The retreat arranges visits to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, an early-morning climb of Pidurangala Rock with breakfast afterwards, walks around Thalkote Lake and sunrise hot-air balloon flights over the Cultural Triangle. Further afield are the forest monastery ruins and nature reserve at Ritigala, the painted caves of the Dambulla Cave Temple and the elephant gatherings of Minneriya National Park.
Sigiriya lies in the dry-zone plains of the Cultural Triangle, a drive of several hours north-east of Bandaranaike International Airport. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Ayurvie Sigiriya, which takes you all the way to the door.
It suits adults, solo travellers and couples who want to commit to a serious Ayurvedic programme in a quiet, rural setting, and who are happy to trade a big hotel's facilities for paddy-field views, simple earthy rooms and a daily routine of treatments and yoga. It is not suitable for families with young children. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Sigiriya, or the other Thema Collection hotels around the island.
