Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions, Negombo

Negombo, Sri Lanka

Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions is a small residential Ayurveda resort in Ethukale, on the northern side of Negombo, built around the idea that you come to stay for a programme rather than a night. Its 12 walled pavilions each have their own garden and a private treatment area, so much of the therapy happens where you sleep, and the resort runs its own Ayurveda centre with resident doctors, therapists and a pharmacy. It belongs to Jetwing Hotels, the Sri Lankan family hotel group, and sits a short walk from the beach and only minutes from the airport.

Where is Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions?

The resort is in Ethukale, about 3 km north of Negombo town centre on the west coast. Negombo Beach is under a kilometre away, so the sea is an easy walk rather than a drive, and Kattuwa railway station is about 700 metres away on the coastal line. Negombo station is about 3 km away.

How do I get from Colombo Airport to Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions?

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is only about 8 km from the resort as the crow flies, and the drive usually takes under half an hour, which makes this one of the easiest places in Sri Lanka to begin or end a trip. The simplest way to arrive after a long flight is a private transfer from Colombo Airport to Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilions booked in advance with Lakpura: an English-speaking driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to the resort in an air-conditioned car, van or coach sized for your group, from 2 up to 15 guests, at a fixed price for the whole vehicle rather than per seat. The same service works in reverse for your departure flight.

What are the pavilions and rooms like?

There are three kinds of accommodation, and every one is designed for a maximum of two adults. The King Pavilions are the largest at 270 m², and the Queen Pavilions are 165 m²; both have a bedroom, a living area, a terrace, a large bathroom with an open-air bath and shower, and a personal treatment space set inside a private walled garden, so a therapist can come to you. The Classic Rooms, at 49.8 m², are in a separate wing at the back of the resort, each with air-conditioning and a balcony or a small garden, and suit guests who want the programme without the pavilion price.

How do the Ayurveda programmes work?

Most guests come on a full-board Ayurveda programme with a minimum stay: the Yoga Retreat and Soft Ayurveda programmes run from three nights, Ayurveda Wellness from five nights and Ayurveda Health Care from seven, with longer stays for the more intensive courses, including a traditional Panchakarma programme. A programme typically includes a daily consultation with one of the resort's Ayurveda doctors, around two and a quarter hours of treatments each day, meals planned around your individual constitution and a daily yoga session. The doctors set the treatment plan after your first consultation, so it is worth arriving with an open diary rather than a fixed schedule.

What is the food like?

Meals are served at Koththamalli by Rohan, the resort's restaurant, which cooks in a Sri Lankan style with a strong emphasis on vegetarian and vegan dishes. For guests on a programme, the kitchen works from the doctor's recommendations, so what reaches your table is chosen for your constitution rather than from a fixed menu. Signature dining set-ups can also be arranged for a special evening.

What else is there at the resort?

Beyond the treatment rooms there is an outdoor swimming pool set in the gardens, a yoga shala for the daily sessions and free Wi-Fi throughout. The atmosphere is quiet and unhurried by design, closer to a retreat than a beach hotel, and the resort suits couples and solo travellers looking for rest more than families or a lively bar scene.

What is there to do around Negombo?

Between treatments, the town has plenty within a short drive. The Negombo fish market and the remains of the Dutch fort stand near the lagoon mouth, and boat trips run on the Hamilton Canal, the Dutch-era waterway that links Negombo with Colombo, and across the Negombo Lagoon. A little further south, the Muthurajawela wetlands are good for birdwatching by boat. For other places to stay in town see our hotels in Negombo, or the other Jetwing hotels around the island.
