Zen Koggala is a small hotel of 11 rooms on the shore of Koggala Lake, at Harumalgoda on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Listed in the past as Moi Koggala by DBI, it is a quiet lakeside base with a pool, a jetty and a co-working room facing the water, used by couples, remote workers and groups who take the whole property.
No. The hotel stands on the lake, with a garden running down to the water, and the nearest beach is about five minutes away. Choose it for still water, birdlife and sunsets over the lake rather than for stepping straight onto the sand. The beaches at Koggala and Habaraduwa are the closest for a swim in the sea.
There are five room types. Every room has air-conditioning, a private balcony, a working desk, a smart TV, a fridge, tea and coffee, and Wi-Fi.
Children under six stay free, and an extra bed can be arranged on request. Check-in starts at 2:00 pm and check-out is by 12:00 noon. If you are travelling with a pet, tell the hotel when you book.
Kayaks go out from the deck and boat safaris leave from the hotel's own jetty, both at extra cost. Early morning is the best time, when the water is calmest and the birds are most active. There is a pool for swimming, and yoga on the deck or lawn can be arranged on request, as can a sound bath in the pool.
You can book room only, bed and breakfast, half board or full board. Breakfast is Sri Lankan or Western, with seasonal fruit, and some of the produce comes from the hotel's garden, with fish and groceries bought in Harumalgoda and nearby villages. Meals are served at a long shared table, with quieter tables close by. There is also a shared kitchen, and an outdoor Sri Lankan cooking session beside the pool can be arranged on request.
Yes, this is one of its main draws. The air-conditioned co-working room seats 15 and looks over the lake. The connection is 300 Mbps fibre, with Starlink as a separate second link, and a generator covers the whole property. Stays of a week, a month or longer are priced by quote.
Yes. A whole-property booking covers all 11 rooms for 22 guests, or up to 30 by arrangement, with no other guests during your stay. It has a three-night minimum and is designed for around 10 guests or more, though smaller groups can ask. Retreat organisers bring their own teacher and programme and use the deck for practice.
The surf town of Ahangama is about 15 minutes away and Galle Fort about 30 minutes by road, best in the late afternoon for sunset on the ramparts. Along the coast are the stilt fishermen, Unawatuna Beach and several turtle hatcheries. Closer by are the Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum in Koggala town and the Handunugoda Tea Estate.
The drive from Bandaranaike International Airport takes about two hours. By train, the coast line from Colombo stops at Koggala and Habaraduwa, and a short tuk-tuk ride completes the journey. Book the Colombo (CMB) Airport transfer to Zen Koggala.
It suits travellers who prefer a calm lake to a busy beach, remote workers who need a reliable connection, and groups planning a retreat or a private gathering. It is not a beach resort, and the sea is a short trip away. For more choice in the area, see our places to stay in Koggala.
