About this experience
Yala National Park sits on Sri Lanka's southeastern coast, where dry monsoon forest, open grassland, freshwater marsh, and coastal wetland meet in a landscape shaped by ancient Precambrian rock and reddish-brown soil. Formally declared a national park in 1938, it covers just under 979 square kilometres and is the country's second largest park by gazetted area, as well as its most visited. It is Block I — the section entered through the Palatupana gate — that draws the greatest number of safari vehicles, and for good reason: it holds one of the densest leopard populations anywhere in the world.
This full-day tour begins with a hotel pickup from Weligama on the south coast, where your English-speaking chauffeur collects you in an air-conditioned vehicle at 10:30 in the morning. The drive south and east takes you through the Southern Province toward the park, with arrival timed for the afternoon safari gate opening at 2:00 pm. At the park boundary you transfer to a dedicated safari jeep, where your English-speaking driver also serves as your tracker — reading tracks, listening for alarm calls, and positioning the vehicle where sightings are most likely.
The afternoon session runs for three hours through the scrub and waterways of Block I. Yala is home to 44 mammal species, and the animals you are most likely to encounter include Sri Lankan elephants moving in family groups, spotted deer standing in open grassland, wild water buffalo, and — with patience and a degree of fortune — the Sri Lankan leopard, an endemic subspecies that represents one of the park's most sought-after sightings. Sloth bear and crocodile are among the other residents. The park also records 215 bird species, among them peacocks, the crested serpent eagle, the black-necked stork, and seven birds found nowhere else on the island.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed in any wild place, and Yala is no different — what the afternoon light, the waterholes, and a knowledgeable tracker can offer is the best possible chance. The late afternoon hours, when animals move toward water as the heat eases, are among the most productive for observation. After the safari concludes, you return to the air-conditioned vehicle for the journey back to Weligama, with a target return time of 9:00 pm.
The tour is run as a private experience, so the vehicle and tracker are dedicated to your group throughout. One litre of bottled mineral water per person is provided. Park entrance tickets can be added at the time of booking using the '+ Tickets' option, or excluded if you hold your own — the listing presents both choices clearly. Food, drinks beyond the water provided, gratuities, and personal expenses are outside the tour. Children aged five and above are welcome on the safari.
