Jetwing Kurulubedda is an adults-only, six-room hideaway among paddy fields and forest at Mahamodara, about ten minutes from Galle Fort. Jetwing calls it one of the most secluded villas around Galle: the thatched and timber dwellings stand on stilts in the canopy, there is a pool above terraced rice fields, and guests can also use the facilities at nearby Jetwing Lighthouse.
The hotel is for adults only (18 and over), and every room is designed for two. All have individual air-conditioning and ceiling fans, a rain shower, a private balcony or terrace with paddy-field views, free Wi-Fi, a television, a minibar, tea and coffee making facilities, a safe and Link Natural toiletries, with butler service. The names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room.
The small restaurant, with only a handful of tables, overlooks lily ponds, gardens and the paddy fields, and serves authentic Sri Lankan dishes alongside international choices at breakfast, lunch and dinner, made with fresh local produce, much of it from the surroundings. Jetwing also offers signature dining experiences at the villa.
The swimming pool sits in the greenery above the terraced rice fields, and there is a library for slow afternoons. The hotel's own experiences include forest walks, birdwatching, a river safari on the Mahamodara and a guided walk along the seashore. Guests also have access to the facilities at Jetwing Lighthouse nearby, including its gym, spa and tennis court.
Galle Fort, the walled Dutch town on the headland, is about ten minutes away by road, with the lighthouse, the Dutch Reformed Church, the National Maritime Museum and the ramparts for a sunset walk. The coast at Mahamodara is close by, with a sea turtle hatchery, and Unawatuna and the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala are a short drive east. Jetwing puts the Handunugoda tea estate about 45 minutes away and the Kottawa Conservation Forest about 50 minutes. For more of the town see our guide to Galle.
The hotel is about 133 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, and most of the drive is on the Southern Expressway. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Kurulubedda, which takes you all the way to the door. If you come by train instead, Galle station beside the fort is a short drive away.
It suits couples and honeymooners who want privacy and nature close to Galle Fort, rather than a beach hotel, and who are happy to trade a big resort for birdsong, a treetop room and a small, personal staff. Families with children will need to look elsewhere, as it is adults only. For more choice in the area see our places to stay in Galle, or the other Jetwing hotels around the island.
