Jetwing Lake

Dambulla, Sri Lanka

Jetwing Lake is a modern 94-room hotel near Dambulla, set in dry-zone forest facing the ancient Siyambalawewa Tank, with a 71-metre infinity pool. It sits at the centre of the Cultural Triangle, about 6 kilometres in a straight line from Dambulla town and 2.5 kilometres from Kandalama; every room has a private balcony, and every room is wheelchair-accessible.

Which room should I book?

All rooms share the same contemporary décor in earthen tones, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a seating area, a private balcony and a bathroom with a bathtub and a separate shower enclosure. Each has air conditioning and a fan, a mini-bar, a satellite television, free Wi-Fi, an in-room safe and a kettle. The three categories differ mainly in space.

  • Deluxe – Jetwing's Deluxe Room, the most numerous at 78 rooms: 46.5 square metres with a lake view, a private balcony and a bathtub. This is the standard choice for a couple.
  • Super Deluxe – the Super Deluxe Room, of which there are 12: 70 square metres, half as large again as a Deluxe, with the same lake view, balcony and bathtub. Jetwing suggests these for families.
  • Suite – one of only four suites, at 138 square metres, with a separate living area, a bathtub and a balcony overlooking the forest and lake. Choose this if you want a sitting room apart from the bedroom.

Jetwing describes each category as a room for two adults. Bookings with us can take up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children, in any of the three categories; tell us who is travelling so the hotel can prepare the right bedding, and consider a Super Deluxe or Suite if you will be three or more.

What are the restaurants and bars like?

The main restaurant, The Viewing Gallery, is open 24 hours and serves Sri Lankan and international dishes, cooked with produce from the Dambulla market and from the hotel's own organic farm. Lu Lin is the Chinese restaurant, open for dinner. There are two bars: the Canopy Bar, among the treetops with a view over the Siyambalawewa Tank, and Isle, beside the infinity pool. Jetwing also offers signature dining, with meals laid out on the deck, by the pool, near the lake, as a barbecue or in your room.

What is there to do at the hotel?

The 71-metre infinity pool runs along the lawn towards the forest, and the Suwa Arana Spa has single and double treatment rooms and two steam rooms. There is a gym, and lawn games including croquet, pétanque and Mölkky. The hotel's own forest is home to the grey slender loris, a rare nocturnal primate, and the resident naturalist leads an hour-long night trail with red-light headlamps to find it; the naturalist also guides birdwatching walks by the lake. Village tours on foot or by bicycle can be arranged, and the hotel runs a 24-hour room service, laundry and a doctor on call.

What is nearby?

The Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the closest of the great sights, and the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is about 7 kilometres away in a straight line, with Pidurangala Rock just beyond it for the view back towards Sigiriya. Kandalama Reservoir is close by, and the Namal Uyana ironwood forest is within easy reach. The ancient cities of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura make full-day trips.

Can I go on safari from Jetwing Lake?

Yes. The hotel's naturalist can accompany you to Minneriya and Kaudulla national parks, where hundreds of elephants gather around the reservoirs in the dry season, the spectacle known as The Gathering. Wilpattu National Park, the island's largest, is a longer day out to the north-west.

How do I get from the airport to Jetwing Lake?

Jetwing puts Dambulla 175 kilometres and about four hours from Colombo. From Bandaranaike International Airport the hotel is about 119 kilometres in a straight line. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Jetwing Lake, which takes you all the way to the door.

Who is Jetwing Lake best suited to?

It suits travellers who want a comfortable, modern base for two or three nights in the Cultural Triangle, with a big pool to come back to after early climbs and safaris. Families do well in the larger Super Deluxe rooms, and the step-free design makes it one of the easier hotels in the region for guests with limited mobility.
