Cinnamon Bey Beruwala is a beachfront resort at Moragalla on the Beruwala coast, with a long pool beside the sea, a Deluxe Wing of larger rooms and suites, and six places to eat and drink. Designed by the architect Channa Daswatte, it pairs clean modern lines with latticework screens and Middle Eastern touches, a nod to the long trading history of Beruwala.
Rooms come in two sizes, Superior and Deluxe, and the names below are the ones you will see when you choose a room. The Deluxe rooms and the Paradise Suite are in the Deluxe Wing, whose guests get its extra privileges.
Every room and suite sleeps two or three adults; children from 12 years count as adults. If you need twin beds or a particular location, say so when you book and we will pass it on to the hotel.
Bufe is the main restaurant, serving buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner with live cooking counters. Fire brings a Mediterranean menu of fresh seafood, wood-fired pizzas and flatbreads to lunch and dinner, and Noodles at Bey cooks stir-fried, soupy and dry noodle dishes from across Asia. For drinks there is Grain Bar, with cocktails, craft beer and ocean views from mid-afternoon until midnight; Ice Bar, which also serves tea and coffee and has live entertainment on Saturdays; and Tranquility Bar, a quiet beachfront bar in a garden by the sea. The hotel can also set up a private barbecue dinner by the sea, a four-course dinner in a private gazebo at Fire, or a poolside breakfast with champagne.
The beach and the pool are the heart of a stay here. Svastha Serene Spa draws on Balinese healing traditions for its massages, facials, herbal body therapies and aromatherapy, and the fitness centre has cardio machines, free weights and a recreational guide who can shape a workout around you. For weddings and events there is the Kutlama Ballroom, named after the Turkish word for celebration and decorated with Turkish influences, and an outdoor venue among palms and lawns with views of the ocean.
The Barberyn Island lighthouse, 34 metres high and built in 1873 with stone shipped from Scotland and England, stands on its islet off Beruwala. The Ketchimalai Mosque on its headland in Beruwala is one of the town's best-known landmarks, and at Aluthgama the Kande Vihara temple is known for its 160-foot (49-metre) seated Buddha. Further south are the Kosgoda turtle hatchery, boat safaris through the mangroves of the Bentota River and the Madu River, snorkelling over the coral at Hikkaduwa, and Galle Fort for a day out. Cinnamon Bentota Beach, Geoffrey Bawa's restored resort, is about 4 kilometres away in a straight line.
The resort is about 82 kilometres in a straight line from Bandaranaike International Airport, north of Colombo, and about 56 kilometres from central Colombo. The simplest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Cinnamon Bey, which takes you all the way to the door. If you prefer the train, Aluthgama railway station on the coastal line from Colombo is a short drive away; arrange a pick-up in advance.
It suits couples and families who want a relaxed beach holiday with plenty of choice at mealtimes, and travellers who want a little more space and privacy will find it in the Deluxe Wing and the suites. Three or four nights leaves time for the beach, the spa and a trip to the turtles or the mangroves.
