This ten-hour private day tour from Bentota traces the southern coast through four distinct stops: a tea estate producing one of the world's rarest white teas, a stretch of shoreline where fishermen balance on wooden stilts above the shallows, the walled colonial city of Galle with its lighthouse and maritime museum, and a turtle conservation area in Kosgoda where hatchlings are raised in protected sand pits before being returned to the sea.
The morning begins at the Handunugoda Tea Estate in Tittagalla, Ahangama — one of the very few tea-growing properties on the island sitting at near sea level, with the Indian Ocean visible from the plantation rows. The estate's most celebrated product is its Virgin White Tea, made only from the youngest, still-closed buds of the tea bush. The buds are cut with scissors rather than gathered by hand, and are air-dried rather than rolled or fired; at no point during harvesting or processing does a human hand make contact with the leaf. A guided walk takes visitors from the plucking fields through the processing room, and ends with a tasting session where the Virgin White Tea can be compared against other grades produced on the estate.
From the estate, the tour continues along the coast to Ahangama, where stilt fishermen practise a technique found nowhere else on earth. Each man perches on a crossbar fixed to a kithul-wood stilt driven into the seabed in the shallows of the Indian Ocean, rod in hand, casting into the water below. The tradition is believed to have taken root during the Second World War, when food shortages and crowded conventional fishing spots pushed local men to find new ground — even if that ground was several feet beneath the surface of the sea.
The afternoon is given over to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built on a peninsula with ocean on three sides. The Portuguese raised the first fortifications here in 1588; the Dutch substantially rebuilt and extended the walls from 1640 onwards, and the result — ramparts, cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings with Dutch-named lanes, the Dutch Reformed Church, and the National Maritime Museum — has survived largely intact. The museum itself occupies a Dutch warehouse dating to 1671, above the fort's old gate, and holds marine artefacts recovered from the seabed off the southern coast, some of them close to eight centuries old. At the southern tip of the peninsula stands the Galle Lighthouse, a white cylindrical tower rebuilt in 1939 on the Point Utrecht Bastion; it remains the island's oldest light station. The rampart walk along the fort walls, with the lighthouse in the middle distance and the sea breaking against the rocks below, is one of the most recognisable views on the Sri Lankan coast.
The final stop is the turtle conservation area at Kosgoda, where eggs collected from local nesting beaches are buried in protected sand pits to incubate safely. Staff care for hatchlings in shallow tanks until the turtles are ready for release. Visitors can learn about the five sea turtle species that come ashore along this stretch of coast to nest, and observe both hatchlings and larger turtles currently being cared for at the facility. The tour returns to Bentota after this visit, completing the day by 6:00 pm. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, particularly for the cobblestone streets of Galle Fort.
