Jetwing Kottukal Beach House is a four-room boutique beach villa in a coconut plantation at Pottuvil Point, at the northern end of Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka's east coast. Run by Jetwing Hotels as a secluded house rather than a hotel, it has just two Deluxe Rooms and two Chalets, a long pool on the lawn and an open view east over the Indian Ocean towards the sunrise, a few minutes from the surf at Arugam Bay.

Jetwing lists the Deluxe Rooms for two adults; our rate allows up to three adults, or two adults with up to two children, so tell us when you book if a third person or a cot is needed. The other two rooms are slightly larger beachside Chalets (47.1 square metres) with private terraces facing the sea; if you would prefer a Chalet, or want to take the whole house for a family or group, ask us and we will check with Jetwing.
Meals are served in a 16-seat dining room with only a garden between you and the sea. Set menus are served at lunch and dinner, and the kitchen will cook other dishes on request with notice. The chef can also design a menu with you from fresh local produce: a barbecue of seafood and meats, a candlelit dinner on the beach, afternoon tea, a meal in the coconut garden, or dining in your room.
Days revolve around the pool, the garden and the beach, and the sunrise over the sea is the reason many guests come. There is a TV room with a DVD library, board games and a Bluetooth speaker, and massages, yoga, Ayurveda treatments and nature tours can be arranged on request. Daily housekeeping, laundry and parking are provided, and there is accommodation for drivers. Weddings and private events can be arranged too.
Surfing is about five minutes away: Arugam Bay beach and its famous point break are just to the south; the house stands at Pottuvil Point, itself a surf spot, and Whiskey Point is further north. In Pottuvil town, Muhudu Maha Vihara is an ancient temple half-buried in the dunes. About an hour south, Kumana National Park is known for its birdlife and wildlife safaris, and Kudumbigala Monastery has meditation caves with Brahmi inscriptions from the 3rd century BC and a rare cylindrical stupa, with a climb to views over the jungle and the sea. Closer to Arugam Bay, Panama Tank is a good place to spot crocodiles and rare birds.
The beach house is about 313 kilometres from Colombo, a journey of just over seven hours across the island, with direct access from the main road that links the south and east coasts. From Bandaranaike International Airport it is about 219 kilometres in a straight line. The easiest way to arrive is a private transfer from Colombo airport to Kottukal Beach House, which takes you all the way to the gate.
It suits couples, surfers who want comfort between sessions, and families or friends who would like an entire beach house to themselves. With only four rooms it is quiet and personal, and it is best for unhurried stays of three nights or more.
